History of Holy Cross/Santa Cruz

 A parish in many ways resembles a family. Moreover, like every family it has a need to celebrate hallmark events and remember its history. When browsing a website, there is a heading that states; ABOUT US; how did we come about, what were our beginnings? And what ensued over the years?

About Us
As the East area of London grew with humble family homes and with the arrival of post-world war II immigration from central Europe, it became necessary to build a place of worship to house this population. New boundaries were drawn, partitioning parts of St. Patrick and St. Mary’s.

The people gathered initially to worship in the Ealing District of London. The new catholic Holy Cross School was completed in 1950, the people moved from Ealing to the basement of the Holy Cross-school for worship. Efforts to raise funds were under way to launch the building of the present church and the first mass took place in the new building, in October 1953.

Since then the new site has been the family home to many faith-filled people who have gathered to celebrate significant hallmark events in the various seasons of their faith journeys.

In the late 60’s and early 70’s a large wave of Portuguese immigration began to arrive in London, making this part of town their humble beginnings. The Portuguese worshiped in various places in the area until Bishop Carter, invited the Holy Cross-church to make room for the Portuguese and provide for them a regular and stable place to celebrate their faith within the context of language and culture.

This transition of the amalgamating of the Anglophones and the Portuguese brought some challenges. It was evident that the overarching number of parishioners were Portuguese from the Azores and Continental Portugal, and in 1984, the parish became a bilingual parish serving the local community and the Portuguese throughout the city, who by this time, had relocated to various parts of the city.

We are experiencing a decline in the Portuguese population due to the elderly demographics. On the other hand, we are blessed with new members whose backgrounds are from Asia, Africa and Latin America

It is incumbent upon all of us to continue to welcome new parishioners and ensure that they are well received and included in the life of the parish, by sharing their faith and traditions in serving in the mission of the Church.

As we enter into a new model of being parish by joining other parishes and catholic communities in east London, to form a Family of parishes called the Fanshawe-Thames Catholic Family of Parishes, we hope to live the vision of the diocese of London for our parishes:

"Being a Missionary Church forming disciples of Jesus."

Uma paróquia em muitos aspectos se assemelha a uma família. Além disso, como toda família, ela tem a necessidade de celebrar eventos marcantes e lembrar de sua história. Ao navegar em um site, há um título que afirma; ABOUT US; Como inidiamos?, Quais foram nossos começos? E o que se seguiu ao longo dos anos?

Como este lado do leste da cidade de London  cresceu com humildes casas familiares e com a chegada da imigração pós-Segunda Guerra Mundial da Europa Central, tornou-se necessário construir um local de adoração para abrigar essa população. Novas fronteiras foram traçadas, particionando partes de St. Patrick e St. Mary.

As pessoas reuniram-se inicialmente para celebrar no Distrito de Ealing, em London.  A nova Escola Católica Santa Cruz foi concluída em 1950, o povo mudou-se de Ealing para a cave  da nova escola de Santa Cruz para as celebraçãoes litúrgicas. Esforços para arrecadar fundos estavam em andamento para lançar a construção da igreja atual e a primeira missa ocorreu no novo edifício, em outubro de 1953.

Desde então, o novo local tem sido o lar da família de muitas pessoas cheias de fé que se reunem para celebrar eventos marcantes significativos nas várias estações de suas jornadas de fé.

No final dos anos 60 e início dos anos 70, uma grande onda de imigração portuguesa começou a chegar a London, tornando esta parte da cidade seu humilde começo. Os portugueses celebravam  em vários lugares da região até que o Bispo Carter convidou a paróquia de  Santa Cruz a abrir espaço e e acolher os portugueses e proporcionar-lhes um lugar regular e estável para celebrar sua fé dentro do contexto da língua e da cultura.

Essa transição de juntar os anglófonos e os Portugueses trouxe alguns desafios. Era evidente que o número abrangente de paroquianos eram Portuguêses oriundos dos Açores e continente,  e, em 1984, a paróquia tornou-se uma paróquia bilíngue que serviria a comunidade local e os portugueses, que nessa época, haviam se mudado para várias partes da cidade.

Estamos vivendo um declínio na população portuguesa devido à demografia de idosos. Por outro lado, somos abençoados com novos membros cujas origens são da Ásia, África e América Latina

Cabe a todos nós continuar a receber novos paroquianos e garantir que eles sejam bem recebidos e incluídos na vida da paróquia, compartilhando sua fé e tradições, servindo a missão da Igreja.

À medida que entramos em um novo modelo de ser paróquia, juntando-nos a outras paróquias e comunidades católicas no leste de London, para formar uma família de paróquias chamada Fanshawe-Thames Família de  paróquias. Esperamos viver a visão da diocese de London para todas as paróquias:  

“Ser uma Igreja Missionária formando discípulos de Jesus”.
